A Decade Inside Broadmoor: Life Among Britain's Most Notorious Inmates
Paul Knight spent a decade inside Broadmoor, one of Britain's most secure psychiatric hospitals. During his time there, he lived alongside some of the country's most infamous criminals. His release in 2012 marked the start of a long road to rebuilding his life. Knight's daily routine at Broadmoor began at 8am. He spent much of his time in the day room, interacting with other patients. Despite small comforts like Friday fish and chips or birthday cakes, he found life inside monotonous and physically draining.
Among the inmates he encountered were serial killer Danny Gonzalez and cannibal Peter Bryan, who had murdered a fellow patient. Knight also crossed paths with Peter Sutcliffe, the so-called Yorkshire Ripper, and Peter Ryan, another convicted killer. Islamist terrorist Haroon Rashid Aswat was another high-profile inmate he met during his stay.
After his release, Knight struggled with basic tasks. But by 2015, he had turned his life around, eventually marrying and settling into a new routine. Broadmoor remains operational, housing patients under strict security. Knight's experience there included both hardship and moments of unexpected normalcy. His eventual recovery shows how life after such confinement, while difficult, can lead to stability.
