There are two main fontanelles: the anterior one on top of the head and the posterior one at the back. The anterior fontanelle is typically about 2.1 centimetres wide, while the posterior is smaller, around 0.5 centimetres. The posterior fontanelle usually closes by the time a baby is two or three months old, and the anterior one often closes shortly after the first birthday.
A soft spot that closes earlier or later than expected can sometimes signal underlying conditions. For example, delayed closure may relate to Down syndrome, achondroplasia, or congenital hypothyroidism. A sunken fontanelle can indicate dehydration, prompting increased fluid intake and a doctor’s visit if it persists. A bulging fontanelle, however, is more serious and may point to head trauma, infection, or other urgent medical issues requiring immediate care.
Regular well-child checkups help monitor fontanelle development alongside overall growth. Parents should consult a healthcare provider if the soft spot disappears unusually early, even if the baby’s head seems to be growing normally. Fontanelles play a key role in early development and usually close on a predictable timeline. Changes in their appearance can provide important clues about a baby’s health.
