Omsk Oblast battles Russia's worst hepatitis C outbreak in 2025

Omsk Oblast in Russia has recorded one of the highest rates of chronic viral hepatitis in the country. In 2025, the region saw 2,143 cases, equal to 118.27 per 100,000 people. This figure is more than double the national average. The situation in Omsk Oblast is particularly severe for hepatitis C. In 2025, there were 1,819 cases, or 100.39 per 100,000 people. This represents a sharp increase, with the infection rate now more than double that of the previous three years.

Other regions also face high infection rates. Kamchatka Krai, the Republic of Crimea, and St. Petersburg have rates roughly twice the national average. In total, 35 Russian regions now exceed the country’s average for viral hepatitis infections. Omsk Oblast remains a hotspot for viral hepatitis in Russia.
