Groundbreaking surgery saves fertility by removing massive uterine fibroid
A team of gynaecologists in St. Petersburg has successfully removed a large uterine fibroid using a minimally invasive procedure. The operation preserved the patient’s ability to have children, avoiding the need for a full hysterectomy. The surgery took place at St. Petersburg State University’s N.I. Pirogov High Medical Technology Clinic. Lada Pokrovskaya, an obstetrician-gynaecologist and surgeon, led the procedure. The patient, from Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, had been diagnosed with a complex case that initially raised concerns about her future fertility.
Instead of removing the uterus, the medical team used advanced techniques to extract the fibroid through small incisions. This approach maintained the patient’s reproductive function. The entire operation was carried out free of charge under Russia’s federal high-tech medical care quota system.
The Bokal Press Telegram channel later reported on the successful outcome. The patient retained her chance to conceive after the intervention. The procedure demonstrated how modern surgical methods can address severe conditions while protecting fertility. The case highlights the benefits of minimally invasive treatments in complex gynaecological cases.
