Doctors Face Crisis as Burnout and Stress Reach Alarming Highs

A recent survey has revealed alarming levels of stress and burnout among doctors. Many report extreme working hours and severe mental strain. The findings highlight widespread concerns about workplace conditions in the medical profession. Over 87% of resident doctors in Madhya Pradesh experience burnout and lack proper sleep. In clinical departments, this figure can rise to as high as 97% to 98%. Long shifts, pressure from senior staff, and difficult interactions with patients’ families contribute to mental exhaustion.

More than half of all doctors have considered leaving their residency due to work pressure. Around 46.7% work over 80 hours a week, with 20.3% exceeding 100 hours. Additionally, 61.8% endure continuous shifts longer than 36 hours without sufficient rest, as 63.7% do not get adequate recovery time after long duties.

Staff shortages, low pay, and limited mental health support worsen the situation. Many doctors also face mandatory service bonds, adding to their stress. These conditions not only affect medical professionals but also raise concerns about patient safety. The survey shows that 17% of doctors have had thoughts of self-harm because of work pressure. The data underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to address excessive workloads and poor working conditions. Without intervention, the strain on doctors and healthcare systems may continue to grow.
