Iloilo City battles rising measles-rubella cases with urgent vaccination drive
Iloilo City has seen a rise in suspected measles-rubella cases, with 72 recorded in 2025 compared to 68 in 2024. As of Morbidity Week No. 24 in 2026, the city reported 11 cases, including six suspected and five confirmed. Health authorities are now taking action to address the situation. The Iloilo City Health Office is updating its masterlist of eligible children and conducting house-to-house campaigns. These efforts aim to encourage parents and guardians to vaccinate their children against measles-rubella (MR). A Measles-Rubella Supplementary Immunization Activity is also planned for August, targeting children aged six to 59 months.
The Department of Health has reassured the public that all vaccines are safe and approved by international organisations. They are free of cost, effective, and provide protection against vaccine-preventable diseases. Parents with concerns are advised to visit health centres for clarification and support.
Despite these measures, vaccine hesitancy and lack of awareness have contributed to a decline in complete immunisation. The City Health Office continues to urge all parents to participate in the vaccination drive for their children’s benefit. The city has recorded a steady number of measles cases in recent years. The upcoming immunisation activity and ongoing awareness campaigns aim to reduce infections. Health officials stress the importance of vaccination to protect children from preventable diseases.
