North Rhine-Westphalia Greens push for women's rights and cheaper green energy

The North Rhine-Westphalia Green Party has launched its state election campaign with a focus on two long-standing priorities. The party is pushing for stronger women’s rights and more affordable renewable energy. These issues will shape its platform in the upcoming vote. At the conference, delegates highlighted the ongoing struggle for women’s safety, freedom, and equality in Germany. The Greens pointed out that the country ranks poorly in Europe on these issues. They called for legal reforms, including the classification of femicide as an aggravating factor in murder cases. A ban on voyeuristic recordings and a consent-based approach to sexual criminal law were also demanded. Additionally, the party seeks harsher penalties for deepfakes and tougher action against platforms hosting them.

Economic independence for women remains another key goal. The Greens in NRW are promoting policies to boost female participation in the economy. They also emphasised the need for high-quality, reliable childcare and emergency coverage across the region.

On renewable energy, the party argued for lower costs to make green electricity more accessible. A reduction in the electricity tax was proposed as one way to achieve this. The conference set the tone for the Greens’ campaign in North Rhine-Westphalia. Their demands cover legal, economic, and social measures to improve women’s rights. They also aim to make renewable energy more affordable for everyone.
