Southern Mindanao prioritizes infant nutrition amid disaster relief efforts

Relief operations are underway across Southern Mindanao following recent disasters. The National Nutrition Council (NNC)-Davao is closely monitoring the health of vulnerable groups, including infants, young children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Authorities are stressing the need to follow strict nutrition guidelines during the response efforts. The Philippines adheres to international standards set by the Department of Health, WHO, and UNICEF for managing infant feeding in emergencies. These rules align with Executive Order No. 51, also known as the Milk Code of the Philippines, which bans the distribution of breast milk substitutes during crises.

Improper use of powdered milk or commercial infant formula in such settings can lead to serious health risks for babies. These include diarrhoea, infections, and other life-threatening conditions. Formula feeding is discouraged unless medically necessary and supervised by trained professionals.

NNC-Davao is working with local government units and humanitarian groups to ensure nutrition-sensitive measures are part of earthquake response efforts. Donors are reminded to coordinate with authorities before sending any nutrition-related aid. In Davao Occidental, the need is particularly urgent, as the province has the region’s highest rates of stunting (15.2%) and underweight children (7.27%). Strict adherence to the Milk Code and emergency nutrition protocols remains critical. These measures protect the health and survival of the youngest and most vulnerable in the region. Compliance ensures that relief efforts do not inadvertently put children at greater risk.
