How Nasal Irrigation Safely Clears Congestion in Babies

Nasal irrigation can help young children struggling with mucus or blocked nasal passages. Paediatrician Lisa Diard, MD, recommends the method for those too young to blow their own nose. It also offers relief for allergies and upper respiratory infections in babies. The treatment works best for children who can sit up and lean forward, usually around 9 months old. Parents should first consult a healthcare provider if their child has frequent nosebleeds, ear infections, or a weakened immune system.

To prepare the saline solution, mix 1 teaspoon of non-iodized salt and an optional teaspoon of baking soda with 2 cups of cooled, sterilised water. Any leftover solution must be refrigerated or thrown away within 24 hours. The irrigation device should also be emptied and cleaned after use.

For the procedure, position the baby with their head tilted slightly to the right. Insert the device into the left nostril, aiming towards the back of the head. Gently push the saline solution in, letting it flow out of the right nostril. A suction bulb can then remove any remaining fluid.

The main risk is introducing harmful bacteria into the sinuses. Using clean equipment and sterile water helps prevent this. Nasal irrigation can reduce the need for over-the-counter or prescription medications, including antibiotics. It provides a safe, at-home way to ease congestion in young children. Proper preparation and hygiene are key to avoiding complications.
