Davao City cracks down on youth vaping during Non-Smoking Month
Davao City is marking National Non-Smoking Month this June with a renewed push against tobacco use. The local government continues its long-standing commitment to protecting young people from nicotine addiction through education and enforcement. Since 2002, the city has observed this annual campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and vaping. The Vices Regulation Unit holds weekly sessions in partnership with barangays and community groups to explain the health risks of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and vape products.
Authorities have tightened enforcement of the Anti-Smoking Ordinance. This includes monitoring sales to minors and ensuring compliance with the smoking ban within 100 metres of schools. Most confiscated tobacco products in the city are vapes, reflecting their growing popularity among younger residents.
Jalyn Pareja, a smoking cessation counsellor, has noted a rise in vape-related cases involving youth aged 18 to 25. The city also checks cigarette advertising and promotional materials to ensure they follow Republic Act 9211 and local regulations. The city government is urging smokers, particularly young people, to use its free cessation services. These include counselling and nicotine replacement therapy through the Smoking Cessation Program. Officials stress that vapes and smokeless tobacco are not safe alternatives, as they still contain harmful substances.
