BDBA Hospital performs Mumbai's first free robotic knee replacements
BDBA Hospital in Kandivali has carried out its first two free robotic total knee replacement surgeries. The procedures mark a significant step in the hospital’s push to enhance orthopaedic care. Both operations were performed at no cost to the patients, with support from medical technology providers. A multidisciplinary team led by Dr Amit Dhond conducted the surgeries. The first patient, Nagamma Hirana, a 52-year-old woman, received a robotic TKR on her right knee to correct a severe varus deformity. Nirmala Koli, the second patient, underwent a similar procedure on her left knee due to bilateral knee arthritis.
The cost of such robotic surgeries in private hospitals usually reaches around Rs 4 lakh. However, Biorad Medisys (CUREXO) covered the expense of the CUVIS Robotic System, allowing the hospital to offer the treatment for free. Dr Ajay Gupta, the Medical Superintendent, highlighted the hospital’s dedication to upgrading services and adopting cutting-edge technology.
Robotic knee replacement improves precision in implant placement. It also reduces tissue damage, speeds up recovery, and enhances long-term results for patients. The successful surgeries reinforce BDBA Hospital’s goal of becoming a centre of excellence for advanced orthopaedic care in Mumbai’s public healthcare system. The hospital has reaffirmed its pledge to provide high-quality medical services to all sections of society. These procedures demonstrate the potential for wider access to advanced treatments.
