Emergency calls for dogs eating cannabis products are increasing: "It was a really scary situation"

Veterinarians are seeing a rise in dogs ingesting marijuana as legalisation spreads. Emergency calls about pets eating cannabis products now exceed 6,800 each year. The issue is expected to worsen during events like the Fourth of July when usage increases. Tommy Egan and Julie Kane’s dog, Fin, became unwell after a morning walk in Ardmore. The dog showed typical signs of marijuana ingestion, such as a drunken gait and urinary incontinence. Veterinarian Jennifer Graham at Main Line Urgent Vet suspected cannabis exposure after examining him.

Fin likely picked up the substance near a local dispensary. Graham regularly treats similar cases as legalisation makes marijuana more accessible. She warns that modern products are far stronger, raising the risks for dogs.

Vets also highlight the dangers of edibles, which often contain toxic ingredients like chocolate or artificial sweeteners. Treatment for affected dogs can involve fluids, oxygen, or medication to manage symptoms. The growing number of incidents reflects wider access to cannabis products. Pet owners are urged to keep such items out of reach, especially during high-risk periods. Immediate veterinary care is advised if ingestion is suspected.
