Texas Opens New $384M Behavioral Health Hospital in Dallas

Texas has taken a major step in expanding mental health care with the unveiling of a new state behavioural health hospital. The facility, located in Dallas' Southwestern Medical District, will provide critical services for hundreds of people with serious mental health conditions. It marks a significant milestone in the state’s long-term plan to improve inpatient care for behavioural health patients. UT Southwestern Medical Center revealed the Texas Behavioral Health Center on Tuesday. The hospital will be the second state-run facility in North Texas, joining the existing Terrell State Hospital. Its location on Harry Hines Boulevard places it at the heart of Dallas’ medical district.

The Texas Legislature allocated $384 million for the design and construction of the centre. This funding will support nearly 300 inpatient beds, addressing a growing need for mental health treatment. Additionally, Children’s Health contributed $261 million to add 92 beds specifically for paediatric patients.

The project is part of a broader state initiative that began almost a decade ago. Since 2017, lawmakers have approved over $2 billion to replace and renovate Texas’ psychiatric hospitals. Officials expect current projects to add around 700 beds by the 2028 fiscal year. The new Texas Behavioral Health Center will significantly increase the state’s capacity for inpatient mental health care. With the addition of these beds, Texas aims to better address critical mental health challenges. The facility represents a key development in the state’s ongoing efforts to expand and modernise behavioural health services.
