Three Anne Arundel County beaches closed due to unsafe bacteria levels

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has issued health advisories for three local beaches. Bayside Beach, Upper Magothy Beach, and Carrollton Manor are affected due to high levels of enterococci bacteria. The warnings were released following recent water quality tests. The latest test results arrived on Wednesday. They showed bacteria levels above safe limits for swimming and other water contact activities. On Thursday, the department officially issued the advisory for Carrollton Manor.

The health department has advised against swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, or any direct water contact at these locations. Ingesting contaminated water may lead to gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhoea or vomiting. People with open cuts or wounds are also urged to stay out of natural waters to avoid infection.

Precautions remain in place for other activities. Fishing and crabbing can still take place if proper measures are followed. These include wearing gloves when handling catch and ensuring seafood is cooked thoroughly before eating. Residents are also reminded to wait at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall before swimming in natural waters. Anyone who comes into contact with contaminated water should wash immediately with hot water and soap. The advisories remain active until further notice. The department will continue monitoring water quality. Residents are encouraged to follow the guidelines to reduce health risks while enjoying the beaches.
