"One-third of organs - outside the abdominal cavity": Primorye surgeons saved a veteran of the SVO from a dangerous hernia

Veteran's life transformed after groundbreaking hernia repair surgery in Russia

A 57-year-old veteran has undergone complex surgery at Primorsky Regional Clinical Hospital No. 1. The man, injured during a special military operation in Khorolsky District, suffered severe shrapnel wounds to his abdomen. These injuries had previously led to his discharge from service on health grounds. The patient had already endured five surgeries, which left him with a large postoperative hernia. A 13 cm defect had formed, displacing nearly a third of his abdominal organs outside the abdominal wall. Doctors decided a conventional repair was too risky.

Surgeons performed a TAR (transversus abdominis release) reconstruction to restore the anterior abdominal wall. The procedure proved challenging due to extensive adhesions and tissue changes from earlier operations. Despite this, they successfully separated the adhesions and returned the organs to the abdominal cavity. The man recovered without complications. He was discharged home on the 12th day after surgery. The operation marks a significant step in addressing his long-term injuries from service.
