How African Cuisine Naturally Embraces the Vegan Lifestyle
African cuisine is already close to being vegan by tradition. Many dishes rely on vegetables, legumes, and occasional meat, with dairy rarely used. This alignment with plant-based eating reflects both historical and modern dietary patterns. Anthropological research shows that early African ancestors primarily ate plant-based foods. Their diet was heavy on vegetables, which many studies link to better long-term health. This tradition continues today, as many African meals can easily become vegan by simply omitting meat.
Veganism also offers a chance to reimagine African cooking. Removing animal products can make dishes lighter, quicker to prepare, and easier to digest. The movement has gained traction, with Afro-Vegan influencers blending traditional recipes with plant-based lifestyles.
In contrast, the typical African-American diet has roots in slavery. Enslaved people were often given animal scraps and flour, with limited access to fresh, wholesome foods. This legacy persists in modern 'soul food,' which often includes fried chicken, ribs, and other high-fat dishes. These foods are linked to higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke in Black communities.
Palm oil, a staple in West African cooking and processed foods, poses additional risks. It has been tied to poor digestion, raised cholesterol, and cancer. Its production also drives deforestation and threatens wildlife.
High-profile figures like Oprah, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z have adopted vegan diets due to health concerns. Their shift highlights growing awareness of the benefits of plant-based eating, particularly for reducing disease risks common in Black populations. African food traditions already lend themselves well to veganism. Adopting plant-based diets could help address health disparities, such as the shorter life expectancy of Black men compared to white men in the US. The move also reduces reliance on harmful ingredients like palm oil.
