Hesse's ozone levels spike to dangerous highs amid heatwave

Ozone levels in Hesse have risen sharply due to extended sunny weather. For the first time this year, the information threshold was breached on Friday, with readings hitting 190 µg/m³ at the Riedstadt monitoring station by 2 p.m. The surge in ozone follows days of strong sunlight across the region. Concentrations tend to be lowest early in the morning but may fall more slowly after particularly sunny periods. The Rhine-Main area and southern Hesse are expected to see the highest levels in the coming days.

Authorities warn that ozone can irritate the mucous membranes, airways, and lungs. This can cause breathing problems, coughing, or headaches. Children, teenagers, and sensitive individuals are advised to avoid intense outdoor exercise when levels exceed 180 µg/m³. Endurance sports become strongly discouraged if readings pass 240 µg/m³.

The HLNUG is tracking the situation closely. Hourly updates on ozone measurements are available on its website. Further exceedances of the threshold are likely as high levels persist. The current spike marks the first ozone threshold breach of the year in Hesse. Residents in affected areas are urged to check updates and limit outdoor activity during peak levels. The HLNUG will continue to monitor and report changes as they occur.
