Manitoba adds social workers to emergency rooms to ease healthcare strain

The Manitoba government is creating eight new social worker positions in emergency departments and urgent care centres. This move aims to improve patient care in busy medical settings. The initiative comes at an annual cost of $1.2 million. At present, only Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre has social workers in its emergency department. The new roles will expand this support to four locations across the province. These professionals will assist doctors and nurses by performing safety assessments and offering care to patients in need.

The Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals has welcomed the additional jobs. However, the union stresses that more action is required to address wider healthcare challenges. It also points out the need for continued support once patients leave hospital and return to their communities. The new positions will cost $1.2 million each year. They are expected to ease pressure on medical staff and improve patient outcomes. The union remains hopeful for further measures to strengthen healthcare services.
