How Telehealth Saved a Mother from Postnatal Psychosis the Second Time
Letitia Bassingthwaighte faced a severe mental health crisis after the birth of her first child. She developed postnatal psychosis just four days after giving birth. This came as a shock, as she had no prior history of mental ill health before the episode. During her second pregnancy, Letitia feared the condition might return. To prevent this, she sought help and was referred to a postnatal psychologist based in Orange. However, the four-hour round trip made regular visits difficult.
She later discovered Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia (PANDA). Through them, she was connected to Gidget Foundation Australia’s telehealth program. This allowed her to receive specialist perinatal mental health care from her home in Dubbo.
With the right support in place, Letitia did not experience psychosis after her second child was born. Both of her children are now thriving and happy in regional NSW. Letitia’s experience highlights the importance of accessible mental health support. The telehealth program enabled her to receive care without the burden of long travel. Her story shows how early intervention and remote services can make a critical difference.
