Abu Dhabi launches 'Safety in the Heat' to protect workers from extreme temperatures

The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre has launched a new programme to tackle heat-related risks. Called 'Safety in the Heat', it aims to educate workers and employers about the dangers of extreme temperatures. The initiative supports the UAE’s annual midday work ban, which runs from June 15 to September 15. The programme warns of five key signs of heat stress: heat rash, heat cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. It provides practical advice to prevent these conditions. Workers are urged to drink at least one litre of water before starting their shift and to consume another two litres every two to three hours during the day.

Carrying a two-litre water container is also recommended. Increasing salt intake during summer months can further help the body cope with the heat. Over the past 11 years, the campaign has reached more than 9 million people through over 22,000 educational and inspection visits. The goal of the programme is to reduce heat-related illnesses and injuries. By promoting workplace safety and proper heat stress management, it seeks to protect workers during the hottest months of the year. The initiative aligns with national efforts to improve labour conditions in high temperatures.
