County Council Adopts Strategic Paper for Hospitals in the Wartburg Region

Wartburgkreis overhauls healthcare with new hospital strategy for 2026

The Wartburgkreis district council has taken a major step to secure the future of local healthcare. On Tuesday, members unanimously approved the 'Strategic Plan for Hospitals in the Wartburg Region'. The plan seeks to guarantee long-term, accessible, and sustainable medical services across the area. A key part of the strategy involves splitting the Wartburgkreis into two medical care regions. The northern region will centre on one high-performance specialist hospital, with the southern region following the same model. Each facility will focus on specific specialisations, including certified centres and essential service areas.

From 1 July 2026, the district will take full ownership of St. Georg Hospital Eisenach, which was previously run by church-affiliated operators. Both this hospital and Bad Salzungen Hospital will remain central emergency care providers, each keeping a full emergency department. The Wartburgkreis will manage both sites, allowing for a unified strategic direction.

The council also elected new members to the supervisory boards of St. Georg Hospital Eisenach gGmbH and GFG. Additionally, discussions are underway about deeper collaboration with Schmalkalden-Meiningen District to improve regional medical coordination. District officials have stressed the need to attract and retain skilled medical staff to ensure rural healthcare remains viable. The plan sets out a clear structure for hospital services in the Wartburg region. It aims to strengthen emergency care, specialisation, and long-term stability. Full implementation will begin with the district’s takeover of St. Georg Hospital Eisenach in mid-2026.
