Vyvanse vs. Adderall: Which ADHD Medication Fits You Best?

Vyvanse and Adderall are both FDA-approved medications for ADHD. Each has distinct features that may suit different patients. Both are classified as Schedule II controlled substances due to their potential for misuse. Vyvanse contains lisdexamfetamine and is designed as an extended-release formulation for once-daily use. It provides all-day coverage with a slower, more gradual effect and a lower risk of peaks and crashes. The starting dose is 30 mg in the morning, with a maximum of 70 mg daily. It is approved for ADHD in children aged 6 and up and is also used to treat moderate-to-severe binge eating disorder.

Adderall contains mixed amphetamine salts and comes in immediate-release (IR) and extended-release (XR) forms. It works quickly and offers flexible dosing options, with a wide range of possible strengths. Adderall IR is approved for ADHD in children as young as 3 and is also FDA-approved for narcolepsy.

Kate Hanselman, PMHNP and VP of clinical psychiatry, emphasises that the best medication depends on the individual. Factors such as personal preference, side effects, misuse risk, and medical history play a key role in the decision between Vyvanse and Adderall. Both medications serve similar purposes but differ in formulation, dosing, and approved uses. The choice between them should be tailored to the patient’s needs. Each requires careful consideration under medical supervision.
