BMC Orders Re-Verification Of Doctor Credentials After Fake Medic Controversy In Mumbai

BMC launches urgent re-check of doctor credentials after fake physician scandal

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a re-verification of doctor credentials across its hospitals. This follows the discovery of an unqualified doctor working at V.N. Desai Hospital. The move aims to ensure all medical staff hold valid registrations with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC). Dr. Bharat Sawant was found to have worked at V.N. Desai Hospital without MMC registration. He allegedly continued to receive a salary of around Rs 2.5 lakh even after being barred from the facility. The contractor responsible, Sai Sanjeevani Polyclinic and Nursing Home, was blacklisted in 2024 for supplying him.

The issue gained traction after Leader of the Opposition Kishori Pednekar raised concerns in the BMC General Body meeting. Congress group leader Ashraf Azmi also called for accountability over the appointment of unqualified doctors. In response, the BMC administration ordered all hospital deans and medical superintendents to verify the credentials of every doctor, with special focus on contract appointments.

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has since issued a notice seeking details of action taken against Dr. Sawant. Additionally, the BMC has now taken direct control of ICU doctor services, ending previous outsourcing arrangements. The re-verification process is underway to confirm the legitimacy of all medical staff in BMC hospitals. The BMC has also tightened oversight by bringing ICU services in-house. Authorities are expected to provide further updates on disciplinary actions following the SHRC’s notice.
