Allegheny County declares code red heat advisory for three days

Allegheny County has issued a code red heat advisory for June 29, 30, and July 1. Temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees during this period. Officials have urged residents to take precautions to stay safe in the extreme heat. The advisory has prompted the opening of five cooling centres in Pittsburgh. These will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from June 29 to July 2. Western Pennsylvania residents can also use a provided link to locate the nearest cooling centre.

Unhoused adults can access water and cooling supplies at Second Avenue Commons every day between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. County pools and spray parks are open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services will check on older adults and those experiencing unsheltered homelessness. Older adults in need can call for assistance or visit senior centres. Residents are also encouraged to check on neighbours, particularly older adults and those with health conditions.

Officials remind everyone to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and never leave children or pets in parked cars. Those who must be outside should watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea, headache, or excessive sweating. The heat advisory remains in effect for three days. Cooling centres, pools, and support services are available to help residents cope. Authorities continue to stress the importance of safety measures during the extreme heat.
