Spain's Partido Popular proposes €700M annual mental health overhaul

Spain’s opposition Partido Popular has unveiled a national mental health plan. The proposal aims to expand access to psychiatric and psychological care across the country. It includes measures to address long-standing disparities in rural areas. The plan sets aside €500 million to €700 million annually for recruitment. This funding would support 10,000 new professionals in the public system. The target includes 2,000 psychiatrists, 3,000 psychologists, and 5,000 mental health nurses.

A key focus is improving support for children, adolescents, and young adults. The proposal also strengthens suicide prevention and provides extra training for healthcare staff. Better coordination between primary care, specialist units, and hospitals is part of the strategy.

Rural access remains a priority. Increased staffing could shorten waiting times and make specialists more available in underserved regions. The Partido Popular’s plan seeks to transform mental health care in Spain. With annual investments of up to €700 million, it aims to reduce gaps in service delivery. The initiative targets both urban and rural communities through expanded staffing and improved coordination.
