Teen overdoses at L.A. juvenile hall spark outrage and legal action
Several teenagers overdosed at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey, L.A. County, in April 2025. The incident involved a water jug laced with drugs being passed among youths. Three were hospitalised as a result of the overdoses. The overdoses occurred months after a California oversight body had already declared the facility unsafe for young people. A water bottle ban by the L.A. County Probation Department and understaffing were cited as factors in the incident.
One of the victims struggled to regain control of his body and remained unwell for weeks afterwards. Responding officers and paramedics administered multiple doses of Narcan to counteract the opioid effects.
The teen who later filed a lawsuit over the incident is now out of custody and training to become a barber. He has accused probation officials of showing little concern for the health of the youths in their care. The California attorney general’s office is now seeking to take over the juvenile halls. This follows ongoing scandals and dangerous incidents at the facility. The move aims to address systemic failures in oversight and safety.
