AREDS2 Formula Offers Stronger Protection Against Vision Loss from AMD
A revised supplement formula, known as AREDS2, has been developed to help slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It offers improved benefits over the original AREDS, particularly for those at risk of advanced vision loss. The formula is now recommended for current or former smokers due to safety concerns with the first version. The original Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) first demonstrated that antioxidants and zinc could reduce the risk of AMD worsening. Building on this, AREDS2 refined the formula to include 500mg of vitamin C, 400IU of vitamin E, 2mg of copper, 10mg of lutein, 2mg of zeaxanthin, and 80mg of zinc. These adjustments removed beta-carotene, which was linked to a higher lung cancer risk in smokers.
Research showed AREDS2 reduces the risk of progressing to late-stage AMD by 18% compared to the original. It also confirmed that lutein and zeaxanthin play a key role in slowing the disease. The supplement is available for those with intermediate or advanced AMD.
However, AREDS2 may cause mild side effects like stomach cramps or nausea. High zinc levels can lead to copper deficiency, while excessive vitamin E may increase bleeding risks, especially for those on blood thinners. AREDS2 provides a safer and more effective option for managing AMD progression. It helps preserve vision longer and lowers the chance of severe central vision loss. Doctors now recommend it for smokers or ex-smokers with intermediate or advanced AMD.
