King County faces deadly surge in drug-related fatalities since May

King County has seen a sharp rise in drug-related deaths in recent weeks. Since 26 May 2026, officials have recorded 37 fatalities linked to substance use. The deaths span multiple cities, including Seattle, Kent, and Auburn. The first recorded case was Wanda Elaine Hembd, a 61-year-old woman from Kent. She died on 10 April 2026 from a mix of morphine, mitragynine, cyclobenzaprine, and bupropion.

On 21 April 2026, Emmanuel Ramirez, a 42-year-old man from Seatac, passed away. His death involved a combination of mitragynine, butalbital, oxycodone, fluoxetine, and lorazepam.

Nicholas 'Nick' Hume Yorde, a 29-year-old Seattle resident, died on 28 April 2026. His cause of death was acute alcohol and drug intoxication, including meprobamate and carisoprodol.

In early June, the deaths continued. David Lynn Winter, a 62-year-old from Seattle, died on 4 June 2026 from fentanyl and methamphetamine. Michael Duane Stegemann, a 53-year-old from Kent, died the next day for the same reason.

Robert Joseph Lumpkin, a 47-year-old from Auburn, died on 6 June 2026. His death resulted from a mix of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. The same day, Ralph Alexander Young, a 64-year-old Seattle man, died from fentanyl alone.

On 7 June 2026, Daniel Vincent Smith, a 37-year-old Seattle resident, also succumbed to fentanyl and methamphetamine. The following day, Kneejamaya Lovie-Lajoy Goldsmith, a 22-year-old woman from Seattle, died from fentanyl intoxication. The King County Medical Examiner confirmed 37 drug-related deaths since late May. The cases highlight the ongoing impact of substance use in the region. Authorities continue to monitor and investigate these incidents.
