Two Colleagues Turn Cancer Battles Into Hope for Others

Rick Letterman was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, in 2021. His colleague Jeff Main later received the same diagnosis. Together, they decided to take action and joined a support initiative to help others facing similar battles. Allegheny Health Network runs an ambassador program for cancer patients. It pairs those currently fighting the disease with survivors who have experienced the same struggle. Terri Ronald, a three-time cancer survivor, manages the scheme.

The program offers emotional support and a long-term perspective to participants. In its first year, it had around 11 volunteers. By the second year, that number grew to about 100. Letterman and Main attended meetings where discussions often focused on multiple myeloma.

Both men volunteered as part of the program to guide others through their cancer journeys. Their involvement came after their own diagnoses and subsequent remission. The ambassador program continues to expand and provide vital connections for patients. Letterman and Main are now in remission and remain active in supporting others. Their efforts highlight the program’s role in offering hope and shared experience to those in treatment.
