Benalmádena doubles allotment leases to boost local food and community bonds

Benalmádena has extended public allotment leases from two to four years under new rules. The change aims to encourage residents to grow more food and build stronger community ties. Mayor Juan Antonio Lara praised the update for aligning regulations with practical needs. The updated bylaw received cross-party support in the council, with only the Socialist Party abstaining. It introduces initial four-year leases, with options for two additional one-year extensions based on performance and demand.

To access the new allotment sites, residents must first complete an ecological horticulture course. Applications must then be submitted through the citizen attention office. Work is already underway to expand the network, with new plots being prepared at Calle Jabea and Al-Baytar Park.

The longer leases are designed to turn casual gardeners into committed growers. Officials hope this will foster knowledge sharing across generations. Many locals already report improved mental well-being from spending time outdoors and exchanging gardening advice with neighbours. The extended leases are set to provide social and educational benefits. They promote healthier lifestyles, closer community bonds, and greater investment in local food production. The new sites will open once preparations and applications are complete.
