Family demands justice after Santa Ana police fatally shoot troubled teen
The family of 15-year-old Jaden Michaca has filed a claim against the city of Santa Ana. They accuse police officers of shooting him multiple times without warning during an incident on 14 June. The claim also states that Jaden’s mother was injured by gunfire in the same event. The shooting took place at 10:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of South Main Street. Police responded to a family disturbance call, where Jaden was reportedly under the influence and destroying property. He had allegedly stabbed the caller before officers arrived.
According to the family, officers did not attempt to de-escalate the situation before using deadly force. Jaden was struck seven or eight times and later died from his injuries. His mother also suffered a hand injury from the gunfire.
Jaden had a documented history of severe mental health struggles. The department had placed him on multiple mental health holds prior to the shooting. The family’s claim further alleges negligence by the city in the employment, training, and supervision of its officers.
The police department disputes the family’s assertion that the original 911 call was specifically a request for mental health assistance. The family is seeking at least £10,000 in damages, though the exact amount remains unspecified. The claim highlights the circumstances of the shooting and the prior interactions between Jaden and the department. The city has yet to respond publicly to the allegations.
