Hidden Grass Seed Dangers Could Be Deadly for Your Pet
Grass seeds pose a serious health risk to dogs and cats. They can cause pain, severe infections, and even fatal complications if left untreated. Owners are being urged to take precautions to protect their pets during walks in areas with tall grass or grain fields. Grass seeds can enter a pet’s body through openings like the ears, nose, eyes, or by penetrating the skin between the toes. Once inside, they may travel deeper if untreated. If inhaled, a seed can move through the airways to the lungs, damaging tissue. In extreme cases, it may even reach the brain, leading to fatal outcomes.
Seeds lodged in the ear canal often cause painful infections and can rupture the eardrum. When embedded in an eye, they typically trigger conjunctivitis, sometimes resulting in corneal damage or blindness. Long-haired dogs are particularly vulnerable, as seeds can hide in their fur and cause abscesses between the toes.
Owners are advised to watch for symptoms such as frequent sneezing, excessive eye or ear scratching, persistent head-shaking, paw-licking, or sudden limping. Immediate inspection is recommended if any of these signs appear. Trimming fur around the paws, especially for long-haired breeds, reduces the risk of seeds tangling in the coat. To minimise the risk, dog owners should avoid tall meadows and grain fields during walks. Daily checks for grass seeds and grooming can prevent serious harm. Early detection and removal are key to avoiding severe health issues in pets.
