Breaking Down Language Barriers in Emergencies: AI Now Saving Lives in Emmendingen District
Since Wednesday, March 17, 2026, an AI-powered emergency call system has been operational at the Integrated Control Center of Emmendingen District, the German Red Cross announced. At its core is an artificial intelligence system that recognizes and translates conversations in real time.
The technology currently supports up to 40 languages. According to the control center, spoken content is identified, translated, and displayed on a screen within seconds—enabling emergency responders to act faster, even when callers do not speak German.
Beyond translation, the system also enhances the localization of emergency calls, allowing for more precise deployment planning. In the future, video calls and automated vehicle emergency calls may also be integrated.
A dedicated server room was set up for the system's implementation, with total costs amounting to approximately €750,000, funded by the district and health insurance providers.
Initial reports indicate the technology is already delivering noticeable improvements in emergency response—even if callers may still find it unfamiliar.
