AI-Powered Biocoach Trainer Cuts Workout Injuries with Real-Time Feedback

A new AI-powered fitness trainer called Biocoach has been developed by researchers at Drexel University and Michigan State University. The system aims to reduce workout injuries by giving real-time feedback on exercise form. With millions of Germans exercising at home, the tool could help beginners avoid common mistakes that lead to accidents. Biocoach uses AI and computer vision to track movements through a camera. It creates a 3D skeleton model of the body, analysing joint angles to spot errors in technique. This 'biomechanical eye' sets it apart from other fitness apps by providing more precise instructions.

The researchers trained the AI on an expanded dataset, adding around 2,400 new annotations to the Qualcomm Exercise Video Dataset (QEVD). Testing focused on 23 popular exercises, such as squats, lunges, jumping jacks, and push-ups. In trials, Biocoach outperformed existing computer vision models in both movement assessment and the quality of feedback given. The need for such technology is clear. In 2023, nearly 13 million pieces of exercise equipment were found in German homes, with one in four households owning at least one device. Many beginners struggle with proper form, increasing the risk of injuries during workouts.

Biocoach offers a way to improve safety and effectiveness in home workouts. By giving instant corrections, it helps users adjust their technique before bad habits form. The system’s accuracy and real-time feedback could make it a valuable tool for fitness enthusiasts.
