Alabama Proposes Adding Rotisserie Chicken to SNAP Benefits for Healthier Families

A new proposal in Alabama aims to expand healthy food choices for families using SNAP benefits. The plan, backed by agricultural and political figures, focuses on adding rotisserie chicken to the list of eligible items. Supporters argue it could help address both hunger and obesity in the state. Representative Donna Givens introduced a bill to allow SNAP recipients to buy Alabama rotisserie chicken. The change would give working families more access to ready-to-eat, nutritious meals. One chicken can feed a family of four for two meals, offering a practical solution for budget-conscious households.

Christina Woerner McInnis, a candidate for agriculture commissioner, highlighted a disconnect between Alabama’s thriving poultry industry and SNAP users’ limited food options. She worked with poultry farmer Dennis Maze and industry groups to develop the proposal. Maze, a strong supporter, noted that poultry contributes £15 billion annually to Alabama’s economy.

McInnis believes the bill benefits both farmers and low-income families. Current data shows three out of four SNAP children in Alabama are clinically obese. With 15% of the state relying on SNAP, she sees this as a chance to improve nutrition while supporting local agriculture.

Givens emphasised that the bill would make SNAP more flexible and responsive to recipients’ needs. The proposal aligns with broader efforts to ensure food assistance programmes reflect real-world challenges faced by families. If passed, the bill would let SNAP users purchase rotisserie chicken, a protein-rich option for struggling households. The move could also strengthen ties between Alabama’s poultry industry and food assistance programmes. Lawmakers will now review the proposal before any changes take effect.
