Anavex stock plummets after withdrawing Alzheimer's drug application in EU

Anavex Life Sciences (AVXL) suffered a sharp stock decline after withdrawing its EU marketing application for blarcamesine, an experimental Alzheimer's treatment. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) had already signalled it would not approve the drug, citing concerns over the current data package. The company pulled its application on March 25, 2026, leading to an immediate stock crash. Shares fell by 18-35% to between $2.33 and $3.43 (€2.33-€2.55), hitting a new 52-week low. By late March, the price had partially recovered to around €3.73-€3.83 but remained down by over 58-80% from its July 2025 peak.

Earlier Phase 2b/3 trials had shown promise, with a 36% improvement in Alzheimer's symptoms and reduced brain atrophy. However, the EMA questioned the strength of the data, potentially requiring further trials or complex analyses. A rejection in Europe often hints at similar challenges with the U.S. FDA, raising doubts about the drug's global commercial prospects. Despite the setback, Anavex holds $131 million in cash and no debt, enough to fund operations for more than three years. Analysts still rate the stock a 'Moderate Buy,' with a $22 target—suggesting a ninefold upside over the next 12 months. Yet, the withdrawal delays the company's plans to bring blarcamesine to market.

The EMA's stance and the withdrawn application have pushed Anavex's stock to deeply oversold levels, with its 14-day relative strength index in the mid-20s. The company now faces a longer path to potential approval, while investors weigh the drug's future against its current financial stability. The outcome will shape both the stock's recovery and the timeline for blarcamesine's availability.
