Anne Arundel's new fire station boosts response times—but staffing gaps remain

Anne Arundel County has opened a new 22,000-square-foot fire station in Crownsville, replacing the old Herald Harbor Volunteer Fire Department. Operational since March, the facility has already boosted emergency call responses by around 30%. Yet, despite the upgrade, staffing shortages remain a pressing concern for local firefighters. The modern station features larger vehicle bays, updated equipment, and built-in cancer reduction measures to protect firefighters’ health. Chief Trishia Wolford highlighted these improvements, calling firefighter wellness the top priority in the new design.

The opening comes as County Executive Steuart Pittman’s proposed 2027 budget includes funding for 21 new firefighter roles. While the union described this as a 'meaningful start,' they noted the department still falls roughly 350 positions short of national safe staffing guidelines. Currently, the practice of cross-staffing—assigning the same crew to multiple vehicles—can stretch resources thin during overlapping emergencies. Officials hope the new hires will help meet the National Fire Protection Association’s recommendation of four firefighters per large apparatus. The union has repeatedly stressed that adequate staffing is critical to both response times and firefighter safety.

The Crownsville station’s ribbon-cutting marks progress in infrastructure, but staffing challenges persist across Anne Arundel County.
