Australia Expands Psychedelic Therapy for Depression and PTSD Treatment
Australia has allowed therapeutic use of MDMA and psilocybin since 2023. These drugs are now used to treat depression and PTSD when other treatments fail. The therapy involves an eight-hour session with either substance under professional supervision. Patients must have tried at least two antidepressants and another therapy without success to qualify. A thorough assessment checks if they can handle the heightened emotional experience. MDMA helps by numbing the amygdala, letting patients face past traumas more easily. Psilocybin, on the other hand, promotes new neural pathways and shifts perspectives.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) plans to expand access by letting more mental health professionals offer the treatment. Currently, any registered and experienced practitioner could soon include psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in their practice. However, clinical psychologist Shai Hipperson warns that insufficient training could risk harm to patients. The TGA’s move aims to make the treatment more widely available. Patients with treatment-resistant conditions may soon have additional options. The expansion depends on ensuring practitioners are properly prepared for the challenges of these therapies.
