Austrian test reveals surprising gaps in kimchi quality and nutrition

A recent test by the Austrian Consumer Information Association (VKI) has reviewed a range of kimchi products available in the country. The popular Korean fermented dish, known for its potential gut health benefits, showed mixed results in quality and nutritional value. While some products impressed in taste and bacterial content, others fell short on key standards.

Out of the tested products, only three unpasteurized kimchi varieties contained live lactic acid bacteria—the strains linked to gut health. These top-performing options came from an organic supermarket, Billa, and a specialty store. Meanwhile, eight kimchi products earned a 'good' rating in taste tests, while five were considered average.

When it came to nutritional scoring, most products received a **C** under the Nutri-Score system. Spar and Oriental Kimchi stood out with the highest grade of **A**, and KoRo achieved a **B**. However, some products failed to meet standard levels for salt or acidity, raising concerns for those monitoring their intake. The VKI advised consumers watching their sodium levels to stick to smaller portions. The tests also confirmed that no kimchi products showed contamination with heavy metals. Additionally, imported kimchi did not outperform European-made versions in quality or taste. The report did not specify how many European manufacturers were included or which brands were tested.

The VKI findings highlight both strengths and weaknesses in the kimchi products available in Austria. While some performed well in taste and bacterial content, others missed key benchmarks for salt and acidity. Consumers now have clearer guidance on which brands offer the best balance of flavour, nutrition, and fermentation quality.
