B.C. expands mental health screening tool for police officers provincewide

British Columbia is expanding the use of HealthIM, a mental health screening tool for police officers. Starting this Wednesday, the programme will reach the Thompson and Shuswap regions. The province has already rolled it out in multiple cities and RCMP detachments across southern Vancouver Island, Prince George, and other key areas. HealthIM works by guiding officers through structured questions when responding to a crisis. The tool assesses an individual’s condition and flags potential risks, including violent behaviour. It also improves how police share information with healthcare workers.

The system helps officers decide whether someone needs emergency care or can be directed to community-based support. RCMP Supt. Michelle Tansey praised the expansion, saying it allows for more compassionate and informed responses in real time. Beyond British Columbia, HealthIM is already in use across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. The B.C. government is funding the rollout with an annual investment of $2 million. This covers implementation in municipal police departments and RCMP detachments throughout the province.

The expansion means more officers will have access to HealthIM’s structured assessment tools. It aims to improve crisis responses and ensure better coordination between police and healthcare providers. The province’s funding will support ongoing training and system updates.
