Baden-Württemberg has launched the Medicell research project to develop rechargeable micro-batteries for medical devices. The initiative aims to create ultra-compact lithium-ion batteries for wearables like hearing aids and insulin pumps. The state government is investing around eight million euros in the three-year programme.

The project will be led by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Ulm. Support will come from research institutions in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, along with a company based in Ellwangen. More firms from mechanical engineering and medical technology are expected to join as the work progresses.

The goal is to extend device runtime and cut waste by replacing disposable batteries. Officials also believe the findings could benefit other sectors, including industrial applications and emerging technologies. The state sees battery research as a way to boost economic growth and strengthen its position as a high-tech leader. While specific partner companies have not yet been confirmed, the collaboration will bring together academic researchers and industry experts. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is funding the project as part of a broader push to advance energy storage solutions.

The Medicell project will run until 2027, with a focus on improving battery efficiency for medical devices.
