Baylor University has launched a new texting campaign to support student well-being. Called HealthyBearsTXT, the initiative sends weekly messages to nearly 1,000 students, offering tips on mental and physical health. The project draws on research-backed advice from faculty and staff while involving students in drafting the texts. The campaign was inspired by a similar programme at the University of Texas at Austin, HealthyhornsTXT. Each week, participants receive two to three messages covering eight key areas: sleep, spiritual wellness, resilience, health risks, exercise, nutrition, relationships, and anxiety. Organisers hope these reminders will encourage better habits and reduce stress.
Mental health remains a major challenge for university students. Surveys show 54 percent struggle with emotional stress, while 43 percent cite mental health as a barrier to their studies. Yet, only 15 percent use counselling services, and just 10 percent visit student health clinics. HealthyBearsTXT aims to bridge this gap by raising awareness of available resources. The project also brings together experts from different parts of campus. Students help write the messages, ensuring they resonate with their peers. At the end of the term, researchers will assess how effective and memorable the texts have been. If successful, the campaign may expand to include graduate students.
HealthyBearsTXT has already received positive feedback from recipients. By combining student input with expert knowledge, the campaign promotes healthier choices across campus. The university plans to review its impact before deciding on future steps.
