Belarus performs first robotic-assisted liver surgery with groundbreaking precision
Belarus has reached a new milestone in medical technology with its first robotic-assisted liver surgery. The procedure took place on 19 February at the Minsk Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantology, and Hematology. Using the Medbot surgical system, surgeons performed a partial liver resection with enhanced precision and minimal invasiveness.
The operation marked the first time the centre used a robot for liver surgery. High-resolution 3D visualisation allowed for unmatched accuracy, while robotic instruments accessed complex areas of the liver that laparoscopy cannot easily reach. The patient experienced minimal blood loss, reduced tissue trauma, and fewer complications, including lower rates of wound infections and postoperative pain.
Since the successful surgery, collaboration with Chinese manufacturer Medbot-System has led to upgrades in the surgical robots. These improvements include sharper precision, AI integration, and expanded training programmes. Over 200 Belarusian surgeons will receive training in Minsk and China by 2025 to further develop expertise in robotic-assisted procedures.
The patient recovered well and is now preparing for discharge. The shorter hospital stay reflects the reduced morbidity associated with this advanced technique.
This breakthrough places Belarusian surgery on par with global standards for treating focal liver lesions. The Medbot system's introduction enhances surgical capabilities, offering patients safer, more precise operations. The centre's ongoing partnership with Medbot-System ensures continued advancements in robotic-assisted medical care.
