Bergisch Gladbach's A-Team Offers Lifeline for People Battling Obesity

A local support group for people living with obesity has been meeting in Bergisch Gladbach since 2022. Known as the A-Team, the group was founded by individuals affected by obesity alongside the self-help coordinator at EVK Hospital. It provides a space where members can share struggles and solutions without fear of judgement.

The A-Team was created to address the challenges of obesity in a supportive environment. Members identify factors like poor diet, hormonal issues, genetics, and emotional stress as common causes. The group focuses on shared experiences, better nutrition, and increased physical activity to help combat the condition.

Meetings take place every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at EVK Hospital, Ferrenbergstraße 24, in the yellow building on the first floor. Each session starts with introductions and ends with members answering three set questions. New attendees are asked to register beforehand via email at [email protected] or by calling 02202/122-3132.

The group collaborates with the hospital's Self-Help Contact Center and the national organisation Obesity Germany. Plans are underway to expand the programme with more lectures based on members' interests.

While exact numbers of obesity support groups across Germany remain unclear, regional networks exist in states like North Rhine-Westphalia, Berlin, and Saxony-Anhalt. The A-Team aims to offer both connection and practical guidance for those navigating similar challenges.

The A-Team continues to grow as a resource for people dealing with obesity in Bergisch Gladbach. By fostering open discussions and shared strategies, the group helps members explore healthier lifestyles. Meetings remain open to new participants who register in advance.
