Protection from Violence - New Women's Shelter in Berlin - Berlin's ninth women's shelter opens with 26 new family apartments
Berlin has opened its ninth shelter for women and children fleeing violence. The new facility provides 26 family spaces across 10 apartments, bringing the city's total to 393 protected places. Since mid-January, 18 women and 13 children have already moved in.
The shelter's location is kept confidential to ensure safety. Inside, residents receive psychosocial counselling, access to a psychologist, and educational support for children. Emergency apartments also offer temporary housing, though families must pay rent themselves.
Berlin is steadily meeting the requirements of the Istanbul Convention, which demands 390 free family spaces. Currently, 239 of these are fully funded, with more planned for 2026. The city's budget reflects this commitment: €37.5 million was allocated for violence prevention in 2025, rising to €43.1 million for 2026 and 2027.
A new Violence Protection Act now gives children an independent right to protection and counselling. This strengthens legal safeguards for minors affected by domestic violence.
The ninth shelter adds crucial capacity, but further spaces are expected later this year. With funding secured and legal protections expanded, Berlin continues to build a stronger support system for vulnerable families. The city's efforts align with international standards while addressing immediate needs.
