Bhiwandi Hospital's Power Outage Exposes Critical Failures in Patient Care

A surprise inspection at IGM Hospital in Bhiwandi has exposed serious failures in both infrastructure and patient care. On May 23, MP Suresh Mhatre visited the facility, uncovering a power outage that left critical units, including the ICU, without electricity. The incident has triggered demands for an urgent investigation into mismanagement and construction delays at the hospital. During the inspection, MP Balya Mama found the hospital operating in complete darkness, despite the presence of a backup generator. Patients, including those in intensive care, were left without essential power during the outage. Mama criticised the administration for failing to maintain basic services, leaving vulnerable individuals to endure extreme heat and unsafe conditions.

The visit also brought attention to the stalled 'Mother and Child Care Hospital' construction project. Mama raised concerns over discrepancies in the reported completion status, alleging possible irregularities in its execution. He questioned how such delays and lapses could occur without accountability. In response, Mama demanded a high-level inquiry into the hospital’s operations and the construction project. He called for strict action against officials found responsible for negligence. Additionally, he announced plans to meet Maharashtra’s Chief Minister to address broader issues of healthcare infrastructure and mismanagement at IGM Hospital.

The inspection has highlighted critical failures in both emergency preparedness and project oversight at IGM Hospital. With calls for an official inquiry now underway, the focus shifts to whether corrective measures will be implemented to prevent further risks to patient safety. The outcome of Mama’s meeting with the Chief Minister may determine the next steps in addressing these concerns.
