Biotin Side Effects: What's the Risk?

Biotin supplements may skew critical lab test results, experts warn

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is essential for health but can interfere with some lab tests. High levels of the vitamin may cause false readings in tests used to diagnose conditions like thyroid disease, heart disease, and cancer. Even low doses from supplements can affect results. The issue arises because many lab tests rely on biotin-streptavidin technology. When biotin is present in high amounts, it can disrupt this process and create inaccurate results. Supplements, including common multivitamins, are the main concern as they often contain higher doses than food sources.

Higher doses, such as those marketed for hair and nail health, pose the greatest risk. Biotin from food is less likely to cause problems since it is not consumed in excessive amounts. In rare cases, supplements can also cause side effects like allergic reactions, nausea, and abdominal pain. To avoid interference, experts recommend stopping biotin supplements at least 72 hours before lab tests. This precaution helps ensure the accuracy of test results. The advice applies even to relatively low doses found in standard multivitamins.
