Daniel Kish, blind since birth, navigates the world using echolocation—clicking his tongue and listening to echoes. His technique allows him to walk through unfamiliar cities, hike trails, and even ride a bicycle without assistance. Now, research shows that this skill can be taught to others, including sighted adults.

Kish's method works by sending out sound waves and interpreting the returning echoes to form mental images. His brain processes these signals in the visual cortex, effectively creating a world map of his surroundings. Studies confirm that expert echolocators can detect movements as small as 5 cm and identify object shapes with precision similar to human vision.

Neuroscientist Lore Thaler, who has researched echolocation for over a decade, collaborated with Kish on a 2024 study. The research involved both blind and sighted participants learning Kish's techniques. After training, scans revealed increased activity in their primary visual cortex (V1) and auditory cortex (A1), proving the brain adapts to this new way of perceiving space.

Kish's organisation, World Access for the Blind, has already trained tens of thousands of people across nearly 40 countries. By early 2026, programs inspired by his work had reached individuals in 20–30 nations, including the US, UK, Germany, and Australia. Thaler's goal is to make echolocation training as standard as long-cane instruction for the visually impaired.

Beyond practical navigation, Kish's work has also influenced sighted people. Many report sharper perception and reduced anxiety after learning the technique.

The study demonstrates that echolocation is not just an innate ability but a learnable skill. With training, both blind and sighted individuals can develop it, potentially transforming how people with visual impairments interact with the world. Kish's methods continue to expand globally, offering new independence to those who adopt them.
