Buchinger fasting: A century-old method for weight loss and well-being
Buchinger fasting, a century-old method, remains a popular approach for weight loss and well-being. Developed by Dr. Otto Buchinger, it is now practised in specialised clinics across Germany. The technique involves strict dietary restrictions and medical oversight to achieve health benefits.
The Buchinger fasting cure starts with a preparatory phase of two days. During this time, participants eat light meals such as vegetables or porridge. On the first day of fasting, an enema is typically administered to cleanse the digestive system.
During the fasting period, which lasts five or more days, only vegetable broth, diluted juices, small amounts of honey or maple syrup, and plenty of fluids are consumed. To help preserve muscle, a protein source like buttermilk is allowed. Medical supervision is required throughout the process to ensure safety.
This method can lead to noticeable weight loss, though maintaining a healthy diet afterward is crucial to avoid the yo-yo effect. Some participants also report an improved sense of inner calm and well-being after completing the fast.
A variation called fasting-mimicking follows a five-day plan with reduced calorie intake. On the first day, participants consume 750-1,100 kcal, followed by around 750 kcal for the next four days. The diet includes low-starch vegetables, low-sugar fruits, plant-based drinks, nuts, and whole grains.
Another modern approach, protein fasting, combines intermittent fasting with protein shakes. It follows an 18:6 eating pattern—18 hours of fasting and a six-hour window for meals. This method aims to support muscle retention while promoting fat loss.
Today, Buchinger fasting is widely available in Germany at clinics like Buchinger Wilhelmi, Johannes-Schlößl, and Spiekeroog courses. Educational institutions, including KEB Weißenburg, VHS Eutin, and MVHS, also offer guided fasting programmes. The Buchinger Wilhelmi clinics remain the largest centres for research on therapeutic fasting, regularly publishing findings in medical journals.
Buchinger fasting continues to be a structured method for those seeking weight management and improved well-being. Clinics and courses across Germany provide guided support, ensuring participants follow the process safely. For lasting results, maintaining a balanced diet after fasting remains essential.
