California's New Superfood Smoothie Packs 50,000 Leaves Into One Glass
A new protein smoothie made from 50,000 leaves has hit the shelves in California. The Blade Smoothie, developed by Palmetto Superfoods, uses Rubisco protein extracted from green plant leaves. This innovative drink promises rapid digestion, bioavailable iron, and gut health benefits.
The smoothie's key ingredient is Rubisco, the world's most abundant protein found in green leaves. Leaft Foods, a New Zealand-based company, developed a method to extract and preserve this protein for food use. Since launching commercial production in 2023, global demand for Rubisco has surged by over 300% by 2025.
The protein's popularity stems from its use in plant-based foods, supplements, and even cosmetics. Major brands like Beyond Meat, Nestlé Health Science, and L'Oréal have partnered with Leaft Foods to incorporate Rubisco into their products. These collaborations have generated tens of millions in revenue for the company.
Now, Californians can purchase the Blade Smoothie at Palmetto Superfoods stores. Each serving costs $13.95 and provides 18g of Rubisco protein, along with 522mg of essential amino acids per gram. The drink comes in two flavours: Japanese Matchacado and Tropical Spirulina.
The launch aligns with growing consumer interest in high-protein diets. Nearly three in five Americans plan to focus on protein intake in 2026 for energy, strength, and weight management. This trend follows a sharp rise in weight-loss medication use, further boosting demand for protein-rich foods.
The Blade Smoothie offers a plant-based protein source with added health benefits. Its availability in California reflects the rising demand for innovative, nutrient-dense foods. The product's success may encourage wider adoption of Rubisco protein in everyday diets.
